Barber Motorsports Park is center stage for the recently released third episode of “Generation Speed: MotoAmerica’s Road To MotoGP.” This compelling series of half-hour programs focuses on the Talent Cup, a new spec-racing class, with riders aged 14 to 21 competing on identical Dunlop-shod Krämer APX-350 MA motorcycles.
One week after its highly anticipated April 4-6 debut at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, the Talent Cup traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, for “MotoAmerica Superbikes at Barber,” joining four other professional road-racing classes: Superbike, Supersport, Twins Cup, and Royal Enfield Build. Train. Race.
In “Sweet Home Alabama,” the Talent Cup participants deal with a dramatic weather swing, in which conditions on Barber’s demanding 17-turn, 2.38-mile road course deteriorate from picture-perfect for race one on Saturday to wet and wild on Sunday during red-flag-shortened race two.

What’s this, yet another obsolete race bike? Not on your life. The Armstrong-CCM CF250 was a pioneer, the first carbon-fiber-framed motorcycle of any displacement to contest an FIM Road Racing World Championship event. Only four examples were built, all powered by Rotax’s ubiquitous two-stroke Type 256 tandem twin.
Reportedly weighing just 11 pounds, the twin-spar frame and deep-section swingarm were designed by Mike Eatough and fabricated by race-car manufacturer Reynard Motorsport in England. The rear suspension is mounted under the engine and works in extension rather than traditional compression.
Niall Mackenzie, who went on to 500cc Grand Prix fame with Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha, raced this particular machine in 1986. He won a second consecutive British 250cc-class crown and placed 21st overall in the world championship, headlined by an eighth in the Belgian GP at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
Originally campaigned under the “Silverstone Armstrong” banner, the works CF250 was later purchased by privateer Jim Hodson, who raced it at the Isle of Man in the 1988 and ’89 Junior TT races, recording a best finish of 12th in the latter event. This historic British race bike was most recently part of the Dale Winfield collection.

Happy 100th birthday, John Penton! Motorcycling is forever indebted to this visionary Ohio-born racer, dealer, and entrepreneur, whose four-figure investment in the late 1960s with Austrian manufacturer KTM led to a decade-long production run of lightweight two-stroke off-road models badged as Pentons.
In 1978, Penton sold the U.S. distribution rights for the machines that bore his name to KTM, having delivered some 25,000 examples ranging in displacement from 100cc to 400cc. KTM honored Penton’s successes with the limited-edition 1997 200 Jackpiner, a modern liquid-cooled version of the 1972 Penton 175 Jackpiner.
The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum has three Pentons in its collection, including a Sachs-engined 1968 Six Day 125, displayed in an elevated off-road exhibit on the third floor. Penton, accompanied by son Jack, likewise a hall-of-fame racer, served as the grand marshal for the 2019 Barber Vintage Festival.

The 2025 Barber Design Camp was a great success. Rising fourth-through-sixth-grade students learned how the world of science, technology, engineering, art, math, and design plays a pivotal role in automotive, motorcycle, and even racetrack design.
During the week-long experience, campers engaged in a variety of hands-on activities, from crafting model vehicles using artificial intelligence and other computerized tools to learning basic motorcycle mechanics.
With access to the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum’s incredible collection and Barber Motorsports Park’s inspiring setting, students ignited their creative and problem-solving skills while having fun.
